It was a double American triumph at the
Australian Open with
Coco Gauff being joined by rising super talent
Iva Jovic in the Last 16 in Melbourne with the 18-year-old gaining revenge on the Italian from the US Open.
Jovic reaches the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time by defeating Paolini and will be clear favourite on Sunday when she faces off against Yulia Putintseva. The latter albeit through
sparring with the crowd saw off Zeynep Sonmez earlier in the day and with it being a fairly open section, Jovic in reality is likely to make her first Grand Slam Quarter-Final.
Jovic won in just under two hours backing up her last win which saw her down Priscilla Hon with ease and it could've been another emphatic win had she not nearly been taken to a third set of her own doing.
Jovic surged 3-0 ahead in the opening set breaking twice in a row to send a message to Paolini early on and despite being broken back, she claimed it straight back to go 4-1 up and was quickly on the verge of the opening set.
She went 5-1 up and went on to rubber stamp the set 6-2 to seal the opener. The second was more of a battle albeit she did still have the impetus throughout it. She went 4-2 up after both exchanged a multitude of breaks of serve. She nearly broke again for 5-2 which perhaps could've sealed the game earlier but despite this she still went 5-3 up. But she was well broken when she was serving for the match first at 5-4 and then at 6-5 after she broke again. It was sent all the way to a tie-break but she managed to prevail sealing a 7-3 win over the Italian.

Jovic joins Gauff
Coco Gauff is also through to the latter stages and unlike Jovic, it is for a fourth straight time. She saw off another American in Hailey Baptiste earlier on grinding out a superb display as ever.
After Daniil Medvedev had put an epic comeback on earlier in the juncture, Gauff took to Margaret Court Arena to give the fans a show of their own.
She rallied from a set down to take down her fellow American 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in an hour and 50 minutes to reach the fourth round. It is her 77th Grand Slam win and came in her 100th Grand Slam match.
"Honestly, I didn’t change too much. I think I tried to get more first serves in, but like you said, she played so well in the first set. Maybe a couple of points go my way and it could be a different outcome, but I wasn’t too upset. I just said, if she plays like this the whole match and I can’t raise my level, then great job to her," said Gauff on court post match.
"I was able to raise my level, and I’m happy with how I mentally stayed calm through that."
Knowing Baptiste so well, she takes a different view in regards to being familiar with her opponent. "I think we’re both competitors, so we don’t take any personal things on the court. We’re both trying to win, and we understand that.
"Obviously, we know each other’s games, but we honestly don’t really practice or play that much. We’ve only played once. I’ve seen her play a million times, but it’s always different when you’re stepping on the court. She plays so different to any other player on tour. I was just trying to be my best to adjust."
She also spoke about the freedom she had on her own serve but also that at other times she was too passive. "Honestly, when I was returning, I was just playing mainly defense because she had so many good first serves. I felt like every return game, I was just more focused on putting the return in the court and just trying to figure it out.
"On the serve, I was just trying to be aggressive with my placement and not be too passive. I think there were some moments where maybe I was a bit too passive. Honestly, I’m out there trying to figure out the balance along with everybody else."
Next up is Karolina Muchova and it is a test she knows will be tricky. "I think today was a good practice — not practice, because Hailey’s tough. It’s not often you play two players like Muchova and Hailey.
"I think I’ll need to try to take what I did today and make some more adjustments to do better. She’s a tough opponent. I always say she’s one of the best players on tour and deserves way more wins than she has, I think, just with injuries and everything. It’s going to be a tough one. It’s never easy with her, but I’m happy with today and I’ll look forward to her tomorrow."
