Appearing at a tournament which she knows well in the Bad Homburg Open, Angelique Kerber said goodbye to one of her friends Andrea Petkovic who has retired from the sport.
Playing doubles with her, it was the first sight of Kerber on a tennis court since being on maternity leave since last Summer. Now four months old, her daughter Liana has been born but Kerber is determined to return to the sport.
Previously announcing the Australian Open as her return date, she reiterated that this past weekend.
She would join Naomi Osaka provisionally as two mothers returning to the sport at the same time and also two Grand Slam champions who are huge draws in the sport.
Osaka herself is planning to return in Australia, but it is not fully known whether she will play warm-up tournaments. Kerber though is going all in with the warm-ups and potentially the United Cup targeted.
“I will return when the new season starts with the goal of playing Australian Open 2024. This includes the preparatory events in January, maybe United Cup for Germany. Returning to the Slam in Melbourne would be a dream," said Kerber as per BILD.
