Canadian tennis star
Bianca Andreescu was gifted a quarterfinal spot at the 2025
Wuhan Open after her opponents were forced to withdraw from their round of 16 encounter.
The 2019 US Open champion was unable to make it to the main draw of the singles event in Wuhan, as she fell in the second round of qualifiers. However, Andreescu partnered with China's Yue Yuan to enter the doubles event.
The duo endured a shaky start, with their opening round victory over the Chinese team of Wang Xiyu and Tang Qianhui coming down to a final 10-point tiebreaker. Following their victory, they were set to take on top seeds
Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.
However, the Italians announced their withdrawal just hours before the quarterfinal encounter. This could in part be due to Paolini's participation in the singles event, as the two-time Grand Slam runner-up faced Danish star Clara Tauson earlier in the day.
Fernandez falters in doubles match
Nonetheless, the duo of Andreescu and Yuan are now slated to face the team of Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic. The eighth seeds also required a final 10-point tiebreaker to defeat the team of Japan's Shuko Aoyama and Spaniard Cristina Busca.
Fellow Canadian
Leylah Fernandez was unable to join Andreescu in the final eight of the doubles event. The 2021 US Open runner-up teamed up with New Zealand's Erin Routliffe, but the duo fell to 4-6 6-4 10-4 to the exciting team of Czech star Linda Noskova and Slovak Rebecca Sramkova.
Andreescu has struggled with injury over the last two years leading to a significant dip in form and a fall in her rankings. The 25-year old has only played a handful of matches on the WTA Tour this season, with her best result being a quarterfinal appearance at the Libema Open in June.
