As the main clay-court swing shifts to the WTA 1000 level with the Madrid Open underway, Bianca Andreescu finds herself competing outside that stage. The former US Open champion suffered a first-round defeat at the Oeiras WTA 125 event, losing to France’s Fiona Ferro in three sets, underlining the contrast between her current position and the tour’s leading names.
Andreescu, seeded fourth and ranked No. 127 this week, was beaten 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 in a match that again reflected inconsistency across different phases. The Canadian showed resilience to recover from a one-sided opening set, but was unable to sustain that level in the closing stages against an opponent ranked No. 246.
The result comes during a week in which the WTA Tour’s top players are competing in Madrid, highlighting the gap between Andreescu’s current ranking position and the upper tier of the circuit. While she is entered in the Madrid Open draw, her campaign began from the first round, without the protection of a seeded position.
Beyond the immediate loss, the defeat has direct ranking implications. Andreescu is set to drop 34 points after failing to match her second-round result from the 2025 Madrid Open, and is projected to fall at least seven places to around No. 134 in the WTA rankings, with potential for further decline depending on results elsewhere this week.

Match pattern highlights ongoing inconsistency

The structure of the match followed a familiar trajectory for Andreescu in recent months. She struggled significantly in the opening set, conceding it in just 27 minutes without holding serve, as Ferro imposed consistent pressure from the baseline and dictated rallies from the outset.
Andreescu responded in the second set with a clear shift in momentum. After falling behind 6-0, 2-0, she produced a sequence of six consecutive games to level the match, showing her capacity to adjust and compete when able to stabilise her timing and execution.
However, that recovery did not translate into sustained control. In the deciding set, Ferro regained the initiative, holding serve more securely and capitalising on key return opportunities. Andreescu’s level fluctuated once again, and a late break allowed the French player to close out the match after two hours and 22 minutes.

Limited WTA 1000 presence shapes her season

Andreescu’s current position is also reflected in her tournament schedule. So far in 2026, she has played only one of the five WTA 1000 events contested to date, appearing in Indian Wells where she was eliminated in the first round. With the Madrid Open now underway, she has instead chosen to compete in a lower-tier WTA 125 event in Oeiras rather than enter the qualifying draw in Spain, underlining her current ranking position and limited access to the top tier.
Her appearance last year in Madrid resulted in a second-round finish, points she has now failed to defend. The resulting drop in the rankings further complicates her pathway into main draws at the highest level, increasing the likelihood of qualifying rounds or reliance on wildcard entries in upcoming tournaments.
Looking ahead, Andreescu is not currently listed in the entry lists for the Italian Open in Rome, either in the main draw or qualifying, nor is she entered for Roland Garros at this stage. Her participation in those events may therefore depend on discretionary invitations from tournament organisers.

Secondary circuit remains central to rebuild

With limited confirmed opportunities at WTA 1000 level, Andreescu continues to rely on the WTA 125 circuit to accumulate points and rebuild competitive rhythm. Her next scheduled event is expected to be the qualifying draw in Saint-Malo, where she is set to be the second seed.
The tournament is expected to feature a competitive field, including players such as Hailey Baptiste, Yulia Putintseva, Alycia Parks and Lulu Sun, underlining the level of opposition even at this tier.
For Andreescu, the immediate objective remains to build consistency across matches and secure consecutive wins, something that has eluded her in recent weeks. As the clay season progresses at the highest level in Madrid and beyond, her results on the secondary circuit will determine how quickly she can re-establish her position within the upper tiers of the tour.
