Caroline
Wozniacki (No. 204) defeated
Angelique Kerber (No. 607) 6-4, 6-3 and has
advanced to the quarterfinals in
Indian Wells. The match had a special touch, considering both
were former No. 1s and Grand Slam champions, and now, mothers returning to the
WTA Tour despite their major successes being several years ago.
In a duel
that brought nostalgia, both experienced some physical challenges during the
match, yet an intense performance unfolded where Wozniacki dominated for a
significant part of the encounter.
The Danish
tennis player started with a strong momentum, showing no issues with her serve
and quickly securing a break in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead. Kerber
faced increased difficulties with Wozniacki's second break, falling behind at
5-1.
However,
the German seized her opportunity and gradually found comfort in the exchanges.
Kerber claimed two consecutive breaks, reaching 4-5 when Wozniacki called for a
medical timeout due to an ankle issue. Upon her return, the Dane swiftly
secured the break and claimed the set 6-4.
Wozniacki's
positive momentum extended into the early stages of the third set, securing
another break to lead 3-0 in just over 10 minutes. The first signs of physical
struggles for Kerber emerged, leading her to request a medical timeout at 4-1
in favor of the Dane. Unfortunately, the German did not finish well physically,
and Wozniacki claimed victory with a 6-2 score.
Kerber can
leave the tournament with positive feelings, achieving three consecutive
victories, including wins over seeded players Jelena Ostapenko (10th) and
Veronika Kudermetova (17th), less than a year after the birth of her daughter,
Liana.
Wozniacki,
for the 37th time in her career, reaches the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event
and awaits the winner between
Yulia Putintseva (No. 79) and defending champion
Iga Swiatek (No. 1). Wozniacki has secured a place in the top 130 and is one
victory away from re-entering the top 100.
