A couple of Americans faced each other in the Roland Garros quarterfinal with Coco Gauff winning 7-5 6-3 and moving to the semifinal.
The duo faced each other last year at the US Open for the first time and it was Stephens who won against a very nervous Gauff. This time around it was Gauff who jumped out to an early lead in the set thanks to some solid play. Both have played well since the start but Gauff has been like a wall moving so well on the court that players struggled to find solutions.
A similar thing happened in this match plenty of times with Stephens only finding a solution fairly late in the set. Gauff for serving for the set at 5-4 but complicated things as she often does. After losing the serve she had to work a bit harder but still got the opening set 7-5.
The 2nd set opened well for Gauff early as she held her serve and even got an early break to make it 3-1. She was up in that game but gifted away two points with two doubles to make it a deuce. She committed another double in that game but was able to hold her serve for the big 4-1 lead. She then added another break making it 5-1 but Stephens broke back to make it 5-2.
She finished it off with 6-2 and another break demonstrating just how tricky it is to play against her when she has a chance to start dictating the point with her return. Up next is Martina Trevisan and neither ever played in a grand slam final. A huge chance for both.
