Anhelina Kalinina racked up another upset at the Mutua
Madrid Open on Tuesday, edging reigning US Open champion
Emma Raducanu 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the first WTA 1000 quarterfinal of her career.
The match was a fierce battle from start to finish with both players having chances to close it out. Raducanu battled back issues throughout the match but forced herself to continue and try and win the match. Ultimately it was Kalinina who was more composed in the final moments:
"Already at the end of the match, I was not thinking about the score, because the intensity was high. I’m just so happy that I could close the match, because it was crazy at the end, so many deciding points and so many rallies. Tough, tough match."
This Madrid experience is starting to prove very valuable for Kalinina who is improving by the day both tennis-wise and rankings-wise. She is getting more experience and proving herself on the red clay:
"I’m very happy that I’m starting to move further in the big tournaments. ... Now I can get into these tournaments, get my experience, play more matches here, and get another match, another opportunity. So I’m getting more experience on this level, and these matches will give me very good experience in my pocket."
