America’s tennis star
Danielle Collins has been ruled out of
the upcoming
China Open. The WTA 1000 event is set to be organised in the China’s
capital of Beijing where some of the top players in women’s tennis will
participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
Collins became another high-profile player who has been
ruled out of the mega-event. It is clear why the 30-year-old has decided to go
that route considering that she has already announced retirement from
professional tennis at the end of the 2024 season. The last appearance for the Florida-born
this season was in the Guadalajara Open where she was knocked out after losing
in the first round to Australia’s Olivia Gadecki with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Collins announced retirement plans at the start of the
year. Things, interestingly, started to look better for the current world
number 10, who won back-to-back WTA events in March. She first won the Miami
Open after beating Elena Rybakina in the final in straight sets with a score of
7-5, 6-3. She then lifted the Charleston Open after beating Russia’s Daria Kasatkina
in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
She then went on to play in the final of the WTA event in Strasbourg
where she lost to fellow American Madison Keys in straight sets with a score of
6-1, 6-2. She also played in the semifinal of the where she came second-best
against world number two Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets with a score
of 7-5, 6-2. Since then, however, things have not gone well for Collins who has
struggle to produce positive results consistently.
Her most recent
participation at the mega-event was in the US Open on her home soil where her
journey was short lived as she suffered a shocking exit from the first round
after losing to fellow countrywoman Caroline Dolehide with a score of 1-6, 7-5,
6-4.
