Britain’s
Emma Raducanu has decided to end her season to focus on her health concerns. The 2025 season is coming to an end, with players giving their all to finish on a high note and build hope for
the next season.
Raducanu has gone through a mixed campaign, with many highs and some lows. Towards the end of the season,
Raducanu
struggled with fitness concerns, especially during the China swing. She was
forced to retire from the second round of the
Wuhan Open against America’s Ann
Li. Raducanu had her blood pressure checked during the match in extreme, humid conditions and was later forced to retire.
In a post on her Thread account, Raducanu provided an
update on her health. Raducanu stated that she feels better and also admitted
that it was a shame that she did not manage to complete the match. "Last
day at the doctors in Wuhan,” wrote Raducanu. “Feeling better now. Shame I
couldn't continue there, but thank you for the messages.”
After the Wuhan disaster, Raducanu featured in the
ongoing Ningbo Open but looked far below her best and was knocked out, losing in
the first round to China’s Lin Zhu with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. According to the latest report from the English media outlet
Daily Express, Raducanu has decided not to take part in any further events this year and has withdrawn from the tournaments in Tokyo and Hong Kong. The report stated that the former US Open winner decided to focus on her health and prepare
for the next season.
Despite the recent setbacks, Raducanu would be pleased with her performances this year. Overall, Raducanu featured in 49
matches in 2025 and won 28, losing 21. As things stand,
she is ranked 29th in the world. Her best outing this year came while playing at
the Cincinnati Open, where she was knocked out after losing in the semifinal to
Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Impressive season
Before arriving in Wuhan, Raducanu explained her
objectives going forward. "I've just got to do my best in the next few
months until Australia," said Raducanu. "Keep working to close the
gap and try to get seeded for Melbourne. I think I'm improving for sure in the
last few months. I just need to stay consistent."
Throughout the seasons, Raducanu pushed some top players to the limit but failed to cross the finishing line. One of those matches came in
the third round at the
China Open, where Raducanu suffered a heartbreaking
defeat to America’s
Jessica Pegula. In the contest, Raducanu had four match
points in the second set.
But the US Open 2024 runner-up produced a remarkable
turnaround as she defeated Raducanu with a score of 3-6, 7-6, 6-0. Raducanu spoke to the media before the Wuhan Open, where she admitted that losing a match like that against a top player was ‘hard’ for her. Raducanu stated that it was
difficult to get ‘head’ around after losing such contests.
“Yeah, I think it was hard for me,” admitted Raducanu.
“The last two matches that I lost, I had match points in both. And it’s not
something that’s really happened to me before and then to happen twice in a
week was pretty new to get my head around. I think the second match I found it
easier to get over than the first because I know I was playing some better
tennis and just improving with my level. I feel like I didn’t take too long to
kind of dwell on it and just got straight back to work and trying to get ready
as best as possible for this week.”
