While the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells moves into its decisive stages in California, two former champions of the tournament will face each other hundreds of kilometres away. Paula Badosa and Bianca Andreescu are set to meet in the semi-finals of the WTA 125 tournament in Austin — an unusual matchup between two players who have both lifted the Indian Wells trophy.
The timing adds a notable contrast. As the WTA Tour’s leading players compete for the title in Indian Wells this week, two past winners of the same event are competing in Texas at a lower-tier tournament. Both players exited early in California: Badosa lost in the opening round to Yulia Putintseva 6–4, 6–2, while Andreescu was defeated by Donna Vekic 6–3, 6–4.
Badosa, currently ranked world No. 106, entered the Austin event with a wildcard as she continues her return from persistent back problems that have limited her schedule in recent seasons. Andreescu, ranked No. 165, also received a wildcard as she looks to regain consistency after a series of injury interruptions.
Their meeting in Austin therefore brings together two players whose careers once reached similar peaks. Andreescu won Indian Wells in 2019, while Badosa lifted the trophy in 2021 — two victories that placed both players among the leading figures on the WTA Tour at the time.

Badosa records three wins to reach semi-finals

Badosa arrived in Austin after an early exit at Indian Wells and entered the WTA 125 event seeking additional matches. The Spaniard began the tournament with a three-set win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse, recovering from a set down to win 2–6, 6–2, 7–5. She followed with a straight-sets victory against Lulu Sun, winning 6–1, 7–6(6). Sun had previously eliminated top seed Emma Navarro earlier in the tournament, but Badosa advanced after closing the second set in a tiebreak.
In the quarter-finals, Badosa defeated Austria’s Sinja Kraus 7–5, 6–1 in one hour and 22 minutes to secure her place in the semi-finals. The Spaniard has now recorded three consecutive wins in Austin as she continues her campaign at the tournament.

Andreescu advances through three rounds in Austin

Andreescu also entered the event with a wildcard and began her run with a win over third seed Solana Sierra, ranked No. 65. The Canadian advanced to the second round before facing Mexico’s Renata Zarazua. In that match, Andreescu secured a straight-sets victory, defeating Zarazua 6–3, 7–5 to move into the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Her semi-final place was confirmed with a three-set win over Australian qualifier Emerson Jones, 6–4, 3–6, 6–3. The result ensured Andreescu would meet Badosa in the final four of the Austin WTA 125.

Previous meetings and shared milestones

Although Badosa and Andreescu have not faced each other frequently on tour, their previous encounters include one notable match at a major event. Badosa defeated Andreescu in the semi-finals of the 2021 Miami Open, winning 6–4, 3–6, 6–2 in what was one of the Spaniard’s breakthrough results at WTA 1000 level.
Andreescu later recorded a win of her own against Badosa the following season in Stuttgart, evening their head-to-head record. Their meeting in Austin will therefore mark another chapter in a limited but balanced rivalry.
Both players also share a significant milestone in their careers through their Indian Wells titles. Andreescu captured the 2019 championship by defeating Angelique Kerber in the final, while Badosa won the tournament in 2021 after overcoming Victoria Azarenka in a three-set match.
At their peaks, both players reached the top five of the WTA rankings. Andreescu climbed as high as world No. 4 following her breakthrough 2019 season, while Badosa reached world No. 2 in 2022 during the strongest period of her career.
Their meeting in Austin therefore brings together two former champions who once achieved major success at one of the tour’s most prestigious events. This week, however, the setting is different: a WTA 125 semi-final in Texas during the same week that the tournament they once won approaches its final stages in California.
