The Eastbourne International were down to the fifth lucky loser today due to withdrawals but many big names in the top ten are still involved and prevailed in openers today.
Earlier on Tuesday, no.5 seed Coco Gauff dispatched compatriot Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-2 needing only 61 minutes to see off the World No.27 to make the second round for only the second time in Eastbourne.
She also maintained her perfect record in first round matches this season albeit that has given her an unwanted record losing most of the second round games. In this tie, she fired in 13 winners including six aces and did not face a break point.
Next up is Jodie Burrage who will be the fan favourite at Eastbourne and saw off Lauren Davis on Monday after initially losing in qualifying.
This was done with ease but for Beatriz Haddad Maia who battled injury to start her grass court season, it was anything but. Facing a tough task in Marie Bouzkova, she came from a set down to prevail 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
But for many of the other main seeds, it was more plain sailing. Ons Jabeur only dropped five games in her opener ousting Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2.
Caroline Garcia came out of the gate superbly against Madison Brengle going 6-1 before edging through in straight sets 7-5 in the second. Jelena Ostapenko not facing Petra Kvitova but Barbora Strycova also eased through.
While Jessica Pegula ended the day with her first grass court assignment of the season which she passed 6-3, 6-4. She is also in doubles action with Gauff this week and they eased through their opener last night so both will return for singles and doubles.
