Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard thought she was simply attending a friend's wedding. Instead, she ended up accidentally matching the bridesmaids, leaving the Canadian admitting she felt "so ashamed" after committing one of the biggest fashion faux pas a wedding guest can make.
The retired Canadian, who attended fellow WTA player Asia Muhammad's wedding in Vancouver, later revealed on Instagram that it was the second wedding in a row where she had unknowingly worn the same colour as the bridal party. Fortunately for Bouchard, the bride found the situation hilarious rather than awkward.
Rather than creating an uncomfortable moment, the mix-up quickly became one of the funniest stories from the celebration, with Bouchard joking that she had become a "backup bridesmaid." Still embarrassed, she even turned to social media to ask whether anyone else had experienced the same problem — and how guests are supposed to avoid it.
The light-hearted episode comes only months after Bouchard officially brought her professional tennis career to an end. The former World No.5, a Wimbledon finalist in 2014 and one of the biggest stars of her generation, may have stepped away from the WTA Tour, but she continues to attract attention — this time not for her tennis, but for an unforgettable wedding wardrobe mishap.

"I have felt so ashamed"

Bouchard confessed she immediately realised the unfortunate coincidence after arriving at the venue. "Ok, this is the 2nd wedding in a row that I wear the same color dress as the bridesmaids (by accident!!)."
The 31-year-old admitted she initially felt embarrassed, while wondering whether wedding guests should be warned about the bridal colours beforehand. "I have felt so ashamed but I console myself with the thought that if the bride cared she would have included the wedding colors in the invitation?!"
Fortunately for Bouchard, Muhammad saw the funny side of the situation. "Obvs Asia is a chill bride and didn't care at all — we said I was a backup bridesmaid." Still, the Canadian couldn't resist asking her followers one final question. "Has anyone done this before and what is the solution?"

Tennis stars making the most of wedding season

Bouchard's appearance came during an unusually busy wedding period across the tennis world, with many players taking advantage of the short break between Wimbledon and the North American hard-court swing to celebrate major milestones away from the court.
Earlier this month, Daria Kasatkina married longtime partner Natalia Zabiiako in a ceremony attended by several WTA players, including Mirra Andreeva, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Arina Rodionova.
Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur also tied the knot after several years together, choosing July 12 — the day of the Wimbledon men's final — for their wedding.
ATP star Tommy Paul likewise married longtime partner Paige Lorenze in recent days, with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Reilly Opelka among those in attendance, while former World No.2 Liudmila Samsonova also celebrated her wedding during the post-Wimbledon break.
As for Bouchard, her playing career may have come to an end after reaching one Grand Slam final, two Grand Slam semifinals and climbing as high as World No.5, but she has proven she can still steal the spotlight — even if this time it was simply by wearing the wrong colour dress.
