Emma Raducanu has recorded her first win of the new season and her first since September after returning from the rain delay the day before to take down Camila Osorio in straight sets.
Raducanu left the court at the
Hobart International 4-2 down yesterday in the second set after winning the first in Tazmania. The Brit was solid to take the opening set but Osorio took the ball early and started to inject pace into her game which saw Raducanu firmly on the back foot and probably thinking here we go again.
A third set seemed to be on the cards as she trailed 4-1 with a double break but Raducanu retrieved one of the breaks before the match was curtailed due to rain.
Upon the restart, Raducanu was rested up and it seemed to benefit her more than Osorio who struggled and her chance went. She stepped inside the baseline and dictated the pace dominating with her forehand and striking down with her backhand as well in some really promising signs.
Raducanu separated herself from Osorio as she won seven out of the last nine games on the restart and completed her emphatic victory on a tie-break and now faces off against Magdalena Frech in the second round.
"These ones mean so much more. It's such a fine line between winning and losing a match like that," said Raducanu post match.
"It can easily affect your whole mood, your whole days, your whole weeks. I try not to let that happen but it's very difficult. This is a very good day to stack up.
"It was a very difficult match. We played under all conditions and coming on, coming off a few times, it was really difficult.
"I'm just really pleased with how I came out and turned it around and then stuck in during the tie-break."
Jovic shines again
With the fact that she had to return the day after to finish her game pencilled in for Tuesday, Raducanu now faces a short turnaround time and will have to return on Thursday to play again. Elsewhere in Hobart, there were wins for Iva Jovic.
The 18-year-old American again barely lost a game and looks very much ominous this week. She saw off the player who went viral for her bad sunburn in Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-2 who can now get some after sun on those burns after a pretty comfortable win. Jovic had reached the semi-finals in Auckland the week before and is eeking closer towards the top 30. She will be a player to watch in regards to making it to the top 16 before the end of the year.
Others to win include Taylah Preston who carried home hopes seeing off Rebecca Sramkova 6-4, 6-1. Elisabetta Cocciaretto saw off Ann Li in three 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Wins also for Ana Bondar and Magda Linette. Antonia Ruzic, Auckland finalist Xinyu Wang and Peyton Stearns all to come before the end of the day here. Back on track after the rain delays.
