Coco Gauff looked pretty unbeatable these past few days in San Jose but Badosa found a way to do it 7-6(4) 6-2.
The American was on top of Baodsa early in this match having a break lead twice in the match but in the game where she needed to finish off the set, Gauff stumbled. It's nothing new for her as she needed six match points to oust Osaka while having issues with closing matches and sets in the past as well. It's something Gauff will need to take a look at because it cost her the match.
The tie-break was an interesting affair until the moment when Badosa hit an incredibly backhand passing shot to get in front of Gauff. The American then struggled with the wind committing two double faults to give away the set:
"It’s never easy to start against such an aggressive player with a big serve. I think I adapted pretty well in the [end] of the first set, and I played a pretty perfect tiebreak, so I’m really happy about that."
The 2nd set was much simpler as Gauff unexpecteadyl fell apart which doesnt' bdoe well for her US OPne aspirations. The American has some clear holes in the game that she's yet to properly address. As for Badosa, she faces Kasatkina next:
"She’s winning a lot of matches, she’s winning against the best players in the world, she’s doing an amazing year."
