Maria Sakkari barely pulled through against Tamara Zidansek in her first match in 2022 winning 6-2 0-6 6-4.
The Greek player came into the match strong playing some pretty good tennis against a shaky Zidansekg. The Greek player is a much better player on hard courts where Zidansek rarely exceeds. Her prowess is clay courts but she came back strong in the 2nd set serving a bagel to Sakkari 6-0. Sakkari had very negative body language in the 2nd set indicating that she wasn't feeling that great on the court.
She admitted as much after the match saying:
"I didn't feel great, to be deadly honest. It wasn't a good match from my side. I found a way to win, which sometimes is enough. I'm excited to be in the second round."
As noted above Sakkari ultimately managed to pull through which is important for her as it's an area where she struggled before. When things go sideways she tended to completely run off the tracks not being able to compose herself in time to win. This time around it worked and she will look to do better in the 2nd round.
