WTA legend
Venus Williams competed at her 24th edition of the
US Open, although her first round loss had fans speculating on the two-time champion's future.
Williams was granted a wildcard to the 2023 US Open, where she faced Belgian Greet Minnen in the opening round. Despite the American's best efforts, Minnen prevailed with an easy 6-1 6-1 victory. This left tennis fans around the world wondering what the future held for the former World No.1.
Williams unsure if she'll play again this season
At 43 years old, Williams is one of the oldest active players on tour. The seven-time Grand Slam champion was candid after her loss, and stated she was grateful for still being able to play at Flushing Meadows.
"I have to really thank my doctors for helping me get here," she said in a post-match conference with ESPN. "That in itself was a blessing....I don't know what I'll do this fall. Definitely too soon to say."
Williams has made no mention of retirement, despite winning only a handful of games over the last few years. In a recent video posted to her official YouTube channel, the WTA icon coyly stated she would like to play till she's 50.
