Coco Gauff defeated compatriot
Sloane Stephens in an All-American quarterfinal clash at
Roland Garros, securing entrance to her first Major semifinal.
The 18-year old looked impressive in her 7-5 6-2 victory over the 2017 US Open champion, avenging her loss to Stephens at last year's event at Flushing Meadows.
"I feel so happy right now. Words can’t explain. Last year in the quarter-final it was a tough loss for me. I think that match made me stronger, to better prepare for moments like today and the moments I’ll face in the next round.
“Last time I played her I lost so I’m glad that today went different. Honestly, I told myself to stay mentally there. I know that there were going to be some shots that probably should have been made and there's going to be some shots that she'd get in the court that probably no other player would get in the court."
Gauff credited her mental strength for the victory, and revealed her ability to focus on the present led to her emerging victorious.
“I think it was just a mental challenge today," said the World No.23. "I mean, yeah, I believe in myself but I think even last year I was too focused on trying to fulfil other people’s expectations. I think you should just enjoy life.”
Awaiting Gauff in her first Grand Slam semifinal is the unseeded
Martina Trevisan, as the Italian is also looking to reach her maiden Major final.
