Aryna Sabalenka and
Nick Kyrgios are set to clash on the court in an exhibition in Dubai, UAE, on 28th December. It will be the second part of the famous Battle of the Sexes, most famously played back in 1973 between
Billie Jean King played and Bobby Riggs.
It will be an intriguing battle between the current women's number one, and the former Wimbledon finalist, in a fascinating matchup. Sabalenka will be utilising this as key preparation ahead of the start to the 2026 campaign, where she will be heading to Adelaide before looking to win back her Australian Open title she won back in 2023 and 2024.
While he has not retired yet, on court appearances from the Aussie are becoming more scarce. Injuries have halted his career over the past two years, with him previously describing his knee as 'cooked.' He missed the whole of the 2024 season before attempting to make a comeback this year. However, he only played at the Australian Open and two Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami. He partnered veteran Gael Monfils in Washington but has not appeared on court since. Fans will be looking forward to seeing him return.
Players reacts to upcoming clash
Sabalenka praised King for everything that she has done for the sport. “I have so much respect for Billie Jean King and what she has done for the women's game." she said. "I'm proud to represent women's tennis and to be part of this modern take of the iconic Battle of the Sexes match."
The four-time Grand Slam champion was also pleased to be playing in Dubai, labelling to as her 'home.' "Dubai is my home, and I know this city loves big, entertaining events," Sabalenka said. "I have a lot of respect for Nick and his talent, but make no mistake, I'm ready to bring my A-game. I can't wait to step on that court at the Coca-Cola Arena and put on an incredible show for the fans."
Kyrgios was not shying out of the opportunity of facing against the world number one. "When the world No 1 challenges you, you answer the call. I've got massive respect for Aryna; she's a powerhouse and a true champion. But I've never backed down from a challenge, and I'm not just here to play - I'm here to entertain. This is what I live for. Dubai, get ready for a show, because I'm going to bring the heat at the Coca-Cola Arena".

Following from prior Battle of the Sexes
Back in 1973, King and Riggs came against each other in Houston. It was a huge moment for women's tennis and sport, with King defeating the former world number one 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in front of 30,000 fans. This did wonders for the women's game, boosting the reputation and continuing the ground-breaking work that King has completed for women's tennis.
Earlier that year, Riggs thrashed Margaret Court in the opening match of the Batlle of the Sexes, defeating the Aussie 6-2, 6-1 in a comprehensive victory. In 1992, Jimmy Connors and Martina Navratilova met on court in the third edition of this format, with Connors coming out on top 7-5, 6-2.
The next edition of this iconic event will be held at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai, with tickets first going on sale 11th November.
