Taylor
Townsend expressed her opinion that tennis is not modern enough and needs to
loosen up.
The
American tennis player had some great results this week to reach the top 32 of
the WTA 1000
Rome Open. During her success, she defeated her compatriot and
world No. 3
Jessica Pegula, but lost in the third round to Chinese player Xiyu
Wang.
In a recent interview with WTA Insider,
Taylor Townsend shared her
perception about tennis and an interesting point of view:
"You
need the right person and the right personality to blend those worlds. You need
someone who understands both. You need somebody to show you can be here, but
you can still be cool and edgy and fun. I think that's me!" Townsend
added.
The
27-year-old tennis player is one of the best in the doubles circuit and is
currently ranked as world No. 5 in the live ranking, although she could still
drop down depending on the results of the Rome Open. In recent weeks, she has
had a fruitful partnership with Canadian player Leylah Fernández, with whom she
has already reached the final of the Miami Open and the semifinals of the
Madrid Open.
In the same
interview, the former world No. 61 revealed the reasons why she decided to play
in the Rome Open singles tournament, starting from the qualifying round:
"For
me and my energy levels, to be able to feel rejuvenated and excited going into
the Slams, I felt it was better for me to just play the lower-level tournaments
and get the matches," Townsend said."
That's what
I needed at the time. But I wanted to challenge myself in a different way this
time, trying to earn my way into these big tournaments. I've stayed in the
States, and I know what that's like. But I didn't know what this was like, so I
wanted to give myself that experience and that competition level," she concluded.
