Coco Gauff has already enjoyed a memorable 2025 season, and when asked to look back on her standout performances, the American star admitted it wasn’t easy to narrow the list down.
Gauff like Aryna Sabalenka who also did the same ranked her best matches of 2025 in an interview segment with
Tennis Channel. But while there were some picks that in reality were quite simple to ascertain, others were more interesting and perhaps not ones that can be picked out of. a hat.
Unsurprisingly, Gauff placed her triumph at Roland Garros at the very top of the list. During that run, she saw off Tereza Valentova, Marie Bouzkova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Madison Keys as well as Lois Boisson who was one of the stories of the tournament. But the run was capped off with a delightful come from a set down triumph against Aryna Sabalenka 7-6, 2-6, 4-6 in favour of the American. “I feel like Roland Garros has to be number one, just because… I don’t know, I feel like that’s important,” she said with a smile.
But picking the rest of the order proved trickier. “Oh, this is hard. Okay, I’ll go based off emotional things and what meant the most to me,” she explained.
The United Cup also stood out as a defining memory, though she initially placed it at number three. She defeated Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 and alongside Taylor Fritz helped to topple Poland. “That one was a lot to me,” she admitted. “I was so nervous before the match — I didn’t want to let my team down — and I felt like that was one of my best matches of the year, playing-wise.”
Another key moment came at Roland Garros against fellow American Madison Keys. Gauff lost the opening set despite holding set points, but was proud of the way she kept her composure. She came back to seal it 7-6, 4-6, 1-6 in favour of Gauff. “That match was important for me,” she reflected. “I still didn’t let it bother me, where in the past I probably would have.”
Double bagel ranks high
As she reconsidered her order, Gauff placed her semi-final run in Rome in second spot. There she won against Zheng Qinwen before then being defeated by Jasmine Paolini who completed a fairytale on home soil. “I’ll do the Rome semi-final actually at number two because I think that was the longest match of my career, and I think that deserves a moment,” she explained.
She also highlighted a unique win over Sofia Kenin, which made the cut for a very different reason. Great was an understatement at the time as she didn't lose a game in 47 minutes. It was despite her thinking otherwise the second time she had won a double bagel. She did it only last year as she thrashed Arantxa Rus in Madrid but she did so again against her compatriot which proved even more special. “I don’t think I’ve ever beaten anyone 6-0, 6-0 in my professional career,” she said. “I feel like that’s a cool thing. It probably will never happen to me again, so I want that there.”
After reshuffling once more, Gauff settled on Keys at number three and the United Cup at number four.
“I’m probably going to regret this in two minutes,” she laughed, “but that’s what we have for the current Coco.”
While it has been an up and down year for Gauff from the ups of winning the
French Open to now battling her serve, it has also produced a lot of special moments and ones that can be revelled in so in the end for Gauff, it was a lot harder than perhaps first thought to pick a line-up for her best games so far this year. But all have their merits to the choices given.
