Russia’s
Diana Shnaider has finally had a reason to smile
after winning her first WTA title in 2025. After having a brilliant 2024
season, Shnaider has gone through a difficult season where she has failed to
produce any significant performance this year.
That, however, changed on Saturday as Shnaider lifted the
Abierto GNP Seguros 2025 title after beating fellow Russian Ekaterina
Alexandrova in the final with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The main difference
between the players was the lack of discipline shown by Alexandrova on the day
as she committed nine double faults, six more than Shnaider. Overall, Shnaider
won 103 points in total, 15 more than Alexandrova.
Talking after the match during the presentation ceremony,
Shnaider stated that it was a ‘pleasure’ to play in front of the fans in the
competition. “Thank you crowd for coming
today and supporting us,” said Shnaider. “The atmosphere was incredible. It was
a pleasure to play, it was a pleasure to show high quality tennis and I hope
you enjoyed this week in Monterrey. Muchas gracias, Monterrey, and see you next
year.”
Before winning the final in Monterrey, Shnaider did not
even manage to cement a spot in the semifinal of the singles competition this
year. Her best appearance was playing in the quarterfinal on three occasions, where she suffered defeats on every occasion. Shnaider’s next assignment will be the
US Open, where she will be hoping to improve on what she did last year, when she was knocked out after losing in the fourth round to America’s Jessica Pegula in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Big win ahead of US Open
Shnaider’s first-round opponent in the fourth and final
Grand Slam of the year will be Germany’s Laura Siegemund. It will be an interesting
battle considering the fact that both players will be facing off for the third time
in professional tennis. In the previous two meetings, Siegemund came out on top
on both occasions. However, the encouraging aspect for Shnaider will be the fact
that the two players will be playing their first match in two years, and since
then, the 21-year-old has become a much better player.
On the other hand, for Alexandrova, it was a lost chance
to make it two titles in 2025. Previously, she lifted the Upper Austria Ladies
Linz title in January after beating Dayana Yastremska in the final with a score
of 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. However, Alexandrova will be hoping that her recent run in Monterrey
will give her the much-needed confidence, where she managed to secure a spot in
the final of a WTA event for the second time this year.
Overall, Alexandrova is going through a decent season
where she has won 32 out of 49 matches, and she will be eying to continue her
good run as she will also travel to New York to take part in the upcoming US Open.
Despite producing consistent results on the court, Alexandrova has not had good
outings at the Grand Slams. At the Australian Open, she suffered a defeat in
the first round. At the French Open and Wimbledon, Alexandrova was knocked
out after losing in the fourth round.
Historically, Alexandrova does not have a great record
while playing at Flashing Meadows, where she has never managed to secure a spot beyond
the third round. Last year, Alexandrova was knocked out in the second round after
losing in the round of 32 to world number one Aryna Sabalenka with a score of
2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Alexandrova’s first round appearance in the fourth and the final
Grand Slam this year will be against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova. This will be the
first-ever meeting between the two players in professional tennis.
