Coco Gauff kept her teenage dream alive on Thursday, as she cruised through to her maiden Grand Slam final at Roland Garros in Paris.
The 18-year old dispatched of Italian Martina Trevisan in a convincing 6-3 6-1 victory, setting a final showdown with World No.1 Iga Swiatek. Despite the enormity of the situation, Gauff was at a loss for words following the match.
"I think I'm a little bit in shock right now," admitted the World No.23. "I didn't know how to react after the match… For me it's a little bit difficult because when I play players like her you have to be more patient.
“Being American, I grew up hitting hard and sometimes I had to remind myself this is not the one to attack. Martina, I played her two years ago and lost to her so I knew how difficult she is to play, especially on clay."
Gauff has been extremely impressive in Paris over the past two weeks, and is yet to drop a set during the entire tournament. However, a formidable Swiatek awaits in the final, as the Polish star is undefeated in 34 consecutive matches. Nonetheless, the American displayed maturity beyond her years when speaking about her mindset heading into the biggest match of her career.
“I think I'm in a mindset now, like, it doesn't matter. I'm going to be happy regardless (of what happens in the final)," said Gauff. "My parents are going to love me regardless. I'm just going to go into it as another match.
“Yeah it's a Grand Slam final but there are so many things going on in the world now, especially in the US, a lot of things going on right now, so I think it's not important to stress over a tennis match."
