Garbine Muguruza appeared on the verge of beating Petra Kvitova 5-7 6-3 7-6(10) at the US Open but a stunning comeback by the Czech sent her into the 4th round
It was a super match overall that finished in a championship tiebreak where Kvitova needed 12 points to win. The first set featured really strong serving by Muguruza who did not play as aggressively opting to allow Kvitova to dictate play. She took it upon herself but ultimately hit a couple of balls wide in very key moments.
She started missing quite a bit after taking the 4-2 lead and saw it turned into a 5-7 lost set. She didn't change anything in the 2nd set but got a set where Muguruza did not serve as well opening the match quite a bit. She got chances and she took them this time around winning the set 6-4.
In the final set, Muguruza jumped out to a 5-2 lead after upping her intensity quite a bit and taking the ball early in rallies. She was much better from the baseline at that point in time and looked fairly close to a win and a place in the 4th round.
At 5-3 when she served for the match, Kvitova played a superb game with Garbine rushing a bit and the 5-2 lead became a 5-5 tie. She then saved two match points at 5-6 to force a tiebreak. She was in the lead for the most of it and finally used her 4th match point to seal it 12-10.
