Angelique Kerber is back in the winners' circle for the first time since June 29, 2022 as she has given Germany an early lead in their semi-final clash with Australia at the 2024 United Cup.
Kerber overcame Ajla Tomljanovic to record her first win as a mother in a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(7) win. She had lost all previous matches this week at the United Cup, while Tomljanovic who has just comeback after a myriad of injuries on the other hand won their biggest match of the week so far to send them through to this point. But it will now be on delightful Alex de Minaur to keep them alive who is currently facing Alexander Zverev.

Angelique is BAAACK! 🇩🇪 Angelique Kerber wins her *first singles match* since June 29, 2022 (!) by defeating Ajla Tomljanovic and gives Team Germany the lead. Kerber saved *TWO* match points to win it 9-7 at the deciding tie-break.

The Australian initially lost her serve in a nervy start, but from there won five consecutive games to serve for the set, however she could not serve it out. A combined total of 17 break points combined between the pair showed the back and forth nature of the clash in the early exchanges.
However she broke the German's serve and stepped up to win it 6-4. This is when Kerber really started to rally though dominating the second set and in particular in the rally exchanges with 16/18 rallies won by Kerber to send it in a decider after sealing it 6-2.
Tomljanovic in the decider though was on the verge of sealing it, she broke to make it 5-4 and was one game away. However Kerber showed continued resolve and held and broke her opponent to serve for the match at 6-5. Tomljanovic though broke back to force a deciding tiebreak and one where Kerber was leading 5-3 at one point, but it was Tomljanovic who turned it around for 6-5. Only to spurn two chances and Kerber showed her experience and resolve to win through 9-7.
