Jannik
Sinner (No. 3) defeated
Ben Shelton (No. 16) 7-6(4), 6-1, advancing to the
quarterfinals of
Indian Wells. The American posed challenges for the Italian in
certain phases of the match, but he couldn't maintain his level and ended the
match without offering much resistance.
The
Australian Open champion showcased why he is one of the best returners in the
world, preventing Shelton from feeling comfortable in his service games.
Initially,
it appeared that the American would be a highly challenging opponent, even
starting as the slightly more dominant player and creating several break
opportunities that he couldn't capitalize on. In the fifth game, Sinner secured
a break, but Shelton, undeterred, persisted in the following games to seek a
break.
In a rare
turn of events, Sinner felt pressured when serving for the set at 5-4 and
squandered a set point. With two unforced errors, he ultimately conceded his
service to Shelton, who was in his moment of maximum confidence. Nevertheless,
both players held their serves, leading to a tie-break where Sinner showcased
his expertise and secured it 7-6(4).
Just when
the match seemed to be reaching its peak, Sinner regained confidence and won 12
of the first 14 points in the second set, taking a commanding 3-0 lead. Shelton
had to fight to hold his service game, but from that point onward, Sinner was
an absolute dominator. Another break in the sixth game and his impeccable
serving sealed the victory for the Italian, concluding with a score of 7-6(4),
6-1.
His next
challenge awaits against the 32nd seed
Jiri Lehecka, who surprised the world
No. 11
Stefanos Tsitsipas and is, for the first time, in the quarterfinals of a
Masters 1000.
