After being the most famous couple on the tennis circuit in both the ATP and
WTA,
Paula Badosa and
Stefanos Tsitsipas have announced this Sunday, May 5, their separation through an official statement from the Spanish tennis player on her official Instagram account.
"After careful consideration and many cherished moments together, Stefanos and I have decided to amicably part ways. We have shared a journey filled with love and learning and it is as friends with immense mutual respect that we now choose to move forward on our own paths," Badosa wrote.
"We are grateful for the support of our friends, family and all who have been part of our story. As we transition into this new chapter of our lives, we continue to wish each other nothing but the best in all our endeavors. We kindly ask for privacy during this time and we thank you for your understanding and respect."
The Spanish tennis player has made the announcement of her separation while preparing to compete in a Masters in Rome where she will seek to achieve a much better result than the Madrid Open. There, Badosa could not even get past the first round of the WTA 1000. Tsitsipas on the other hand won Monte-Carlo and reached the final of Barcelona in a recent resurgence.
The latter was very much similar if not better in terms of a form revival than Marketa Vondrousova who recently started divorce proceedings then started performing again. So perhaps this has been in the offing since before his return to the top and only just announced now.
They initially took the tennis world by storm by announcing their relationship 11 months ago with what is called a 'soft launch' when they dropped hints on each other's social media platforms and were very canny in doing so. It started off by sharing selfies and a joint playlist on Spotify before officially going public and confirming they were together. They have since been spotted constantly training together, on holiday or in each other's player boxes. Especially with both having respective injury layoffs over the course of the past year.
Paula Badosa like her now ex-boyfriend has been through a lot of heartache in terms of injuries and now has to deal with it alone.
But it has now ended surprisingly. Their relationship itself was a surprise with Badosa previously with model Juan Betancourt and dropping hints that she was after a ring and getting married. But this never happened and she initially had to deny reports that they were split up around this time last year. Badosa though proved those reports to be somewhat right when she ended up in a relationship with the Greek.
Going through her own turmoil over the last 12 months with a stress fracture in her back, she has often withdrawn from matches or been spotted in tears due to the false starts that have affected the former top five star who had the tennis world at her feet by winning Indian Wells. But as she aims to return towards the top, it won't be Tsitsipas by her side as they have now broken up.
