While the WTA Awards don't allow the readers to vote, the same cannot be said for TennisUpToDate with votes now open for the Newcomer of the Year from a myriad of options as the season completes.
Victoria Mboko is seen as the favourite for the WTA Award which also features
Alexandra Eala and
Maya Joint. Let's run through the options for the poll.
Victoria Mboko - Canadian Open Queen
The rising Canadian star was incredible on the ITF Tour to start the year and had a huge winning streak before she found her way onto the main tour by virtue of a wildcard for Miami. She vindicated that decision by impressing there and went on to make the third round at Roland Garros.
She enjoyed an incredible fairytale run at the Montreal version of the Canadian Open and then she went on to seal the Hong Kong Open after a barren run which saw her ascend to a new status and struggle to deal with that. She went on to win the title to end the year.
Lois Boisson - French Open standout
Lois Boisson last year looked for all the money to have her breakout then as she reached the French Open through the wildcard route after having a standout start to the year but injury disaster hit and she couldn't play.
Ironically before she played this year's tournament, she was known more for being called out by Harriet Dart for supposedly not wearing deodorant over her results but while the Brit went backwards, she went on to reach the semi-finals on debut of Roland Garros.
She also won her first WTA title in Hamburg a month later and had an incredible year.
Alexandra Eala - living up to billing
For a long time, Alexandra Eala was heavily lauded mainly for being from the Philippines, a country starved of success but also the fact she was training at the Rafael Nadal Academy.
Albeit this was a bit of a blessing and a curse as she couldn't get the results when she moved from juniors up to seniors. But this season she has got stronger and reached the semi-finals of Miami after beating two top five players including a famous win over Iga Swiatek.
While she also made her first tour final at Eastbourne as a qualifier losing to Maya Joint. A player who has made a major breakthrough in 2025.
Iva Jovic - plucky American continues to dazzle
Long lauded as the next star of American tennis, the 17-year-old was born to Serbian parents but lives in Los Angeles so carries the look of a Serbian/Baltic player with the accent of an LA native.
Hard to think that compared to the rest she is only 17 with Mirra Andreeva for instance only a year older but she has been around for quite some time while Jovic hasn't.
She made her main draw debut at all of the Grand Slams for the first time in her career and surprisingly lifted the WTA 500 title in Guadalajara. She is well in the top 40 ending her debut year and made the third round on home soil in Cincinnati as a lucky loser.
Maya Joint - Aussie ace continues to win
Maya Joint is a bit of an interesting case as the Australian continues to win titles adding Rabat and Eastbourne but she has yet to string together that big Grand Slam run.
In reality when she does she will be tough to beat. She was born in the US to an Aussie father and German mother and relocated to Brisbane as a child.
She has only got past the first round once in a major but made two semi-finals alongside those titles to show the breakout is nearly there. She also became Aussie No.1 with the downfall of Daria Kasatkina leading Joint who started the year barely in the top 100 to ascend to top status ahead of a 2026 homecoming.
Eva Lys - Lucky Lys to start but consistent to end
While not technically new as many pointed out on social media, the 23-year-old has been at her best this year and had one of the biggest ranking rises.
She went from World No.129 to World No.40 in a single season and reached the Quarter-Finals in Beijing, fourth round of the US Open and the latter stages of the Australian Open and is now a lot more consistent.
Battling an autoimmune disease and also online trolls and stalkers, Lys has let her tennis do the talking all year and has also garnered quite a fanbase for her humorous content and her stunning fits.
