In our Preview of Day Three, Wednesday, September 13, at the WTA 500 Cymbiotika San Diego Open, the Round of 16 gets underway with Ons Jabeur, Maria Sakkari, and Caroline Garcia among those on the court.
Up first, third seed and World No. 9 Sakkari will take to the court in Barnes Stadium where she will face qualifier Camila Osorio, who defeated Magdalena Frech in the Round of 32. As one of the top seeds, the Greek player received a bye through to this round and she will be hoping to make a good start to her run at the tournament after having a difficult time at the US Open.
Sakkari was ousted in the opening round of the New York major and was visibly upset afterward, even suggesting that she could take a break from the sport. However, the 28-year-old has since revealed that the love and support she received after the Slam helped her to keep playing.

Jabeur, Garcia, and Krejcikova also in Barnes Stadium

Following Sakkari, the tournament's top seed Jabeur will face World No. 27 Anastasia Potapova, who moved past Alycia Parks in three sets to make the Round of 16. This will be the first time that the two players have met on hard courts, with Jabeur leading their overall head-to-head 1-0 after she won their match 6-4, 6-0 on grass at the Birmingham Classic.
Next up, fourth seed Krejcikova will play against Anhelina Kalinina, who ousted Karolina Pliskova in the Round of 32. The Czech player currently leads their head-to-head 2-0, with their last meeting being in the third round of the Australian Open, where Krejcikova secured a straight-sets victory.
After 5:30 p.m., second seed Garcia will face 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who dominated her match against Elise Mertens in the first round, winning 6-1, 6-3. Both Stephens and Garcia were eliminated in the opening round of this year's US Open, meaning both players will be motivated to have a better run here. The French player leads their head-to-head 4-3, but the American won their last encounter at the Cincinnati Open a few weeks ago.

Haddad Maia and Ostapenko also on the courts

After the Garcia-Stephens clash, seventh seed Beatriz Haddad Maia will face Marta Kostyuk. Both competed in the first round, with the Brazilian player prevailing over Leylah Fernandez in three sets while the Ukrainian ousted Magda Linette in straight sets.
Over on Court 2, Sofia Kenin will take on compatriot Katie Volynets before Aliaksandra Sasnovich plays against Emma Navarro. Following this, Jelena Ostapenko will take on Danielle Collins. The Latvian currently leads their head-to-head 2-0.
