The
WTA Finals will take place in Cancun, Mexico from October 29 - November 5. The race is still on for four of the eight spots at the tournament, with the likes of
Jessica Pegula and
Ons Jabeur in the running.
Four players have already confirmed their spots in Cancun. World No. 1
Aryna Sabalenka leads the qualifiers with 8210 points. The 25-year-old won the Australian Open back in January, defeating Elena Rybakina in the final. Recently, she finished as runner-up at the US Open and overtook
Iga Swiatek at the top of the WTA Ranking for the first time in her career.
Swiatek has also passed far beyond the threshold of 4640 points with 6906. The Polish player faced disappointment at the recent US Open, failing to defend her title when she crashed out in the fourth round against Jelena Ostapenko. However, Swiatek has still had a successful season overall, defending her French Open title back in May.
Gauff and Rybakina through as Jabeur risks missing out
Coco Gauff and Rybakina are also safely through with 5620 and 5476 points respectively. The former won her first ever Grand Slam title at the US Open earlier this month and has also qualified in doubles with Pegula.
However, Pegula is still just below the threshold for qualification in singles with 4405 points. Her victory at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open in August was a huge boost although she was left disappointed by an early exit at Flushing Meadows.
Marketa Vondrousova is next on the list with 3661 points. The reigning Wimbledon champion was looking solid as she reached the semi-finals in New York, but an arm injury sustained there has made things more uncertain in recent weeks.
In seventh is Karolina Muchova, who is only eleven points behind her compatriot with 3650 points. The Czech player made it to the final of the French Open this year before finishing as runner-up to Gauff at the WTA 1000 Cincinnati Open in August.
The points gap remains tight as Jabeur sits in eighth with 3316 points. The Tunisian player made it to her second consecutive Wimbledon final this year but once again finished as runner-up. She suffered a fourth-round defeat at the US Open before crashing out of the Guadalajara Open Akron in her second round.
Only 300 points behind Jabeur is Maria Sakkari with 3010. The Greek player has had a resurgence recently after a disappointing season, including a first-round exit in New York. The Greek player defeated Caroline Dolehide to win her first-ever WTA 1000 title in Guadalajara, suggesting that she is back on form.
