This afternoon,
Naomi Osaka withdrew from the
French Open at
Roland Garros and a statement has since been released by FFT President, Gilles Morreton on this outcome.
Osaka decided pre-tournament to skip doing any press or external media during this tournament which resulted in a joint statement from all Grand Slam organisers and a fine issued following her opening win over Patricia Maria Tig yesterday.
The wording of the statement revealed that she would potentially receive further Code of Conduct violations if this continued and that tougher sanctions would be imposed e.g being defaulted from the tournament.
But today, she decided to withdraw saying she will now take some time away and wants to work with the tour to discuss ways that these procedures can be made better.
In a short statement on the Roland Garros website, Morreton said the following:
"First and foremost, we are sorry and sad for Naomi Osaka. The outcome of Naomi withdrawing from Roland-Garros is unfortunate. We wish her the best and the quickest possible recovery, and we look forward to having Naomi at our Tournament next year.
"As all the Grand Slams, the WTA, the ATP and the ITF, we remain very committed to all athletes’ well-being and to continually improving every aspect of players’ experience in our Tournament, including with the Media, like we have always strived to do."
