Bianca Andreescu drew directly on her defining career moment to navigate a high-pressure situation on her return to the
Billie Jean King Cup, helping Canada level their Qualifier tie against Kazakhstan in Astana. The former US Open champion defeated Sonja Zhiyenbayeva 6-4, 7-6(4), responding after Canada had fallen behind in the opening singles.
The result leaves the tie balanced at 1-1 after Yulia Putintseva earlier defeated Kayla Cross 6-3, 7-5. Cross, making her debut in the competition, was unable to convert a competitive second set, placing immediate responsibility on Andreescu in her first Billie Jean King Cup appearance since the 2022 Finals.
Andreescu, currently ranked No. 130 following an injury-affected period across 2024 and 2025, has been rebuilding form in 2026 through
a mix of ITF and lower-tier events. She entered the tie with a positive win-loss record this season, but limited success at
WTA Tour level, making this performance a relevant indicator of competitive progress.
Facing a partisan home crowd in Astana, Andreescu relied on experience acquired at the highest level, specifically referencing her victory in the 2019 US Open final against Serena Williams, when she had to overcome the support of the entire crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium, who were cheering for her opponent.
Andreescu uses Grand Slam experience to manage hostile conditions
Andreescu described the influence of her US Open triumph as directly applicable to the conditions in Kazakhstan, where the home crowd consistently backed the local team. She acknowledged the challenge of the environment, but framed it as a motivating factor rather than a disruptive one.
“That final helped me in this moment today because it is obviously not easy playing against a crowd,”
said Andreescu after her victory. “But in a way that makes me try even harder so I can quieten the crowd.”
The Canadian also pointed to the broader nature of team competition, where national support becomes an integral component of the contest. In that context, she emphasised both respect for the home atmosphere and the importance of internal cohesion within the Canadian side.
“The Kazakhstan people are really patriotic, which is great to see, but the Canadian team did a really good job. And these moments are what Billie Jean King Cup is all about – you do try to be as patriotic as possible.”
Maintaining a stable level across both sets proved decisive, particularly as the second set moved into a tiebreak. Andreescu avoided fluctuations in intensity and limited unforced errors at critical moments, an approach she attributed to her ability to remain composed despite external factors.
“I feel I kept a steady attitude throughout all of that, and I am pleased. And while I cannot really say which match – or occasion – was harder, the Kazakhstan supporters did a really great job today.”
Zhiyenbayeva debut highlights gap in experience
On the opposite side, Zhiyenbayeva’s performance marked her first appearance at senior level in the Billie Jean King Cup. The teenager, ranked No. 1023 in the WTA standings, has built her profile primarily on the ITF circuit, where she claimed two titles in 2024 and reached a career-high No. 15 in the junior rankings.
Despite the straight-sets defeat, Zhiyenbayeva framed the match as a significant milestone, particularly given the opportunity to face a Grand Slam champion. “It was a good debut for me,” she said. “After all, my opponent is a Grand Slam champion, so it was a real pleasure to play against her. When I was watching her at the US Open in 2019, I never imagined that one day I’d be out there competing against her.”
The tie now moves into its decisive phase, with doubles scheduled before the reverse singles. At least four matches will be required to determine the outcome, with the possibility of a fifth if both teams split the remaining contests.
Decisive clash with Putintseva looms
A potential meeting between Andreescu and Putintseva remains central to the outcome of the tie, given both players secured wins on the opening day. Their previous encounters and stylistic similarities point toward a match defined by variation, defensive resilience, and changes in rhythm.
“We both have one match under our belt, so I feel we both have a good sense of the court and the environment,” Andreescu said of her scheduled clash with Putintseva. “I have played her before, and it definitely won’t be an easy match. We have similar game styles; we both like to change the rhythm of a match, and we’re both fighters. You always want to win but, if I give my heart out there, I will have done my job.”
Putintseva’s presence adds further weight to the encounter. By competing in Astana, she has extended her record as the Kazakhstani player with the most Billie Jean King Cup ties played and moved into sole possession of second place for most match wins for her country in the competition.
For Canada, champions in 2023, progression would mark a return to the Finals after missing last season’s concluding stage. In that context, Andreescu’s ability to translate past Grand Slam experience into present performance could again prove decisive as the tie reaches its conclusion.
