The climax to the 2026
French Open is upon us.
Mirra Andreeva and
Maja Chwalinska has battled past all the obstacles in their way to move within one win of clinching Grand Slam glory. The final will be played on Saturday, 6th June with tennis fans across the world perched in front of their TV screens ready to watch a belter of a final.
It has been one of the most topsy turvey
Grand Slam tournaments in memory. A large number of surprises have come up along the way, mostly surrounding Chwalinska, with Andreeva one of just three top 10 players to reach the quarter-final stage, and the only on to progress from there.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka would collapse against Diana Shnaider, losing 10 games in a row as she sees her
Roland Garros title chances abolished for another year at least. Elina Svitolina would also lose at this stage. Four-time champion Iga Swiatek exited at the last-16 stage with Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, Victoria Mboko, Karolina Muchova and reigning champion Coco Gauff losing even earlier in the tournament.
The players who remain avoided any of these troubles and have been rewarded for it. Andreeva is in a first Grand Slam final at the age of 19 after what has been a tremendous clay swing. A title in Linz was backed with a semi-final in Stuttgart. A final run in Madrid was ended to the hands of Marta Kostyuk, who Andreeva was able to extract her revenge on in the semi-finals in Paris.
She has played some brilliant tennis throughout the tournament, not letting anyone get the better of her while dropping just one set in the process.
Chwalinska has also dropped a single set, and that includes the matches from qualifying. The Pole is just the second qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final after a hugely historic and improbable run. She defeated the likes of Qinwen Zheng, Maria Sakkari, Anna Kalinskaya and Shnaider in the semi-finals to secure a maiden Grand Slam final in the most spectacular of circumstances.
The job is not done yet. She entered the tournament as the world number 114, but could leave inside the top 15 if she clinches a maiden WTA title. It will be a significant story whoever claims the title with it set to be watched around the world by millions.
