Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki began their doubles campaign as they likely team for the last time at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
Williams and Wozniacki made the perfect start to proceedings defeating Nao Hibino and Makoto Ninomiya 6-2, 6-4 in what was a great contest.
They were teaming for the first time despite being close friends and Wozniacki in particular was taking part in her first doubles match since 2016 and it was her first win since 2011.
“It’s amazing to be able to share the court with Serena. Every time I missed, she was like: ‘You did a great job!’ I’m hard on myself so I was like: ‘I need to play with you all the time!’” said Wozniacki.
“For me at the beginning, I was really just trying to work out where I was supposed to be standing. I just listened for Serena to tell me what to do and I did it. She was a great leader and I was just trying to follow her.
“This is probably the most fun I’ve had. I wish we had done it sooner!”
