The WTA
Berlin Open will resume on Saturday with
Maria Sakkari,
Petra Kvitova, Caroline
Garcia, among others.
The
quarterfinal matches of the 2023 Grass Court Championships Berlin were
suspended due to the weather conditions in the German city. As a result, the
quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Saturday, with the final
scheduled for Sunday.
In the first
quarterfinal match,
Donna Vekic will face Alina Avanesian, both of whom have
been surprises at this stage of the tournament. Avanesian, a 20-year-old player
who entered as a lucky loser, defeated Daria Kasatkina in the first round,
while Vekic eliminated the defending Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina.
On the same
side of the draw is
Marketa Vondrousova, who defeated Andreescu in the first
round and Sakkari, the sixth seed and the highest-ranked player on that side of
the draw.
In the
other section of the draw, Russian players
Veronika Kudermetova and Ekaterina
Alexandrova will face each other. Kudermetova received a wild card entry and
defeated Qinwen Zheng and Aryna Sabalenka, while Alexandrova eliminated
Samsonova and Coco Gauff. Their last meeting was in the final of the Libema
Open, with Alexandrova emerging as the winner.
The final
quarterfinal match will be between Petra Kvitova (7th seed) and
Caroline Garcia
(third seed). This will be the only match between seeded players in the
tournament, as five of the top eight seeds were eliminated early.
The final,
which will determine the new champion of the 2023 WTA Berlin Open, will be
played on Sunday. The reigning champion from 2022 is Ons Jabeur, following the
withdrawal of Swiss player Belinda Bencic.
