World No. 1
Iga Swiatek swept aside
Danielle Collins in the second round of
Indian Wells
with a score of 6-3, 6-0. The 4-times Grand Slam champion faced difficulties at
the beginning of the match against the American, but eventually cruised to an
easy victory in a dominant encounter.
A
challenging match was anticipated for Swiatek, who had encountered problems
against Collins in the second round of the Australian Open. This time, Collins
had the support of the local crowd. The Polish player has won 26 of her last 28
matches and aims to reclaim the title she won in 2022.
In the
early stages of the match, Collins displayed solidity in contesting points with
Swiatek. She faced her first break point against her in the fourth game but
managed to save it, maintaining the parity until 3-3. The American had her
first two break opportunities in the seventh game, but Swiatek navigated
through the challenge to stay in the set.
From that
point onwards, the Polish player was overwhelming against Collins, who
struggled against the 2022 Indian Wells champion's well-distributed shots.
Swiatek sealed the set with a single break, winning 6-3.
The second
set lasted just over half an hour, primarily due to Swiatek's excellent level
of play. Faced with the Polish player's consistency, Collins began to take more
risks in her shots, attempting to secure winners quickly, but the exchanges
were always dominated by the world No. 1.
Collins'
errors, combined with Swiatek's effectiveness, resulted in a triumph after nine
consecutive games in her favor, closing the match 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 21
minutes.
In the
third round, Swiatek awaits the winner of the match between
Camila Giorgi and
the 26th seed
Linda Noskova. The 18-year-old already surprised Swiatek earlier
this year by eliminating her in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
