As February turns into March, the tennis world will now turn their attention over to the next WTA 1000 events being held in the USA. The Sunshine Swing will bring the heat with
Indian Wells the first stop in what is set to be a hugely dramatic month.
Focusing on the prior week, there has been more movement up and down the rankings with players looking to put themselves in the best possible position ready to catapult themselves further up the order with the latest WTA 1000 tournaments just around the corner.
No change in top 20
Despite all the tennis tournaments going on, there was not that much involvement from the top players in the world. Aryna Sabalenka remains very comfortably in first with a lot of points on the line in the coming weeks. Iga Swiatek stays just above Elena Rybakina with Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova remaining out to see out the top six.
Jasmine Paolini was the highest ranked player in action at the Merida Open. The Italian looked like she had a clear pathway towards success with a lot of the big seeds having bowed out early but she got unstuck herself in the semi-finals. Even a title would have kept her in seventh, just under 2000 points behind the trio of Americans.
Another 1000 points is set to come off Mirra Andreeva's tally but for now she stays firm in eighth position with Elina Svitolina and Victoria Mboko closing the top 10.
Iva Jovic was the only other current top 20 player in action at the ATX Open. She was supposed to be joined by Pegula but the American number two wisely chose to withdraw after going the distance in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, not attempting to defend her title. The 18-year-old sensed an opportunity but failed to take it, losing in the last-16. She stays on the exact same amount of points as Clara Tauson with the Dane sitting in 17th, one spot above Jovic.

Navarro tumbles down rankings
At the start of last week
Emma Navarro was still a top 20 player. She opted to play in the ATX Open as she looked to recoup some of the points from her Merida Open title last year. This was not anywhere close to happening as she fell at the first hurdle. A five place drop sees the first bit of movement in the rankings as she drops five places to 25th. Diana Shnaider, Elise Mertens, Anna Kalinskaya, Qinwen Zheng and Emma Raducanu all benefit.
The big movers start to appear now.
Cristina Bucsa was the player to end Paolini's expedition in Mexico, and she went on and won her first WTA title. She rises a stark 32 places and now finds herself debuting in the top 32 in the world, sneaking in at 31st. The runner-up, Magdalena Frech, also benefits from this deep run. She climbs up a large 21 positions to begin March at world number 36.
Back off to Texas, and the ATX Open champion, Peyton Stearns, benefited greatly from her maiden hardcourt title and first WTA success since 2024. A 14 place rise was necessary and now she finds herself 48th in the rankings. A much higher rise for the runner-up Taylor Townsend can be seen further down the list. She was boosted up by exactly 32 positions as she was propelled back into the world top 100 in 87th.
Further up the rankings and it is more bad news for McCartney Kessler. Last year's finalist in Austin has been out of action for a couple weeks with a knee injury and was unable to turn up and participate. Due to this she is now 11 places worse off and now languishes in 51st.
Shuai Zhang was a winner from the ATX Open, moving up 24 places after her semi-final run to 62nd with the other loser in the last-four stage, Ashlyn Krueger, up 21 positions into 81st as she makes a return to the top 100. Kimberley Birrell also bowed out at this stage but in the tournament in Mexico, ascending 11 positions to 69th.
Ajla Tomljanovic (-11 to 85th), Francesca Jones (-20 to 93rd) and Anna Blinkova (-10 to 94th) all lost ground over the past week.
Paula Badosa loses another 21 positions and is officially outside of the top 100. Her injury situation continues to hound her as she struggles for any consistent patches on the tennis court.
The opposite can be said for Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva who became the first Andorran tennis player to be ranked in the top 100 after reaching the quarterfinal of the Merida Open. The 20-year-old continues to make history with a +25 position gain putting her 97th in the world.
Over in Turkey, the WTA 125 tournament was won by the third seed Moyuka Uchijima. Her reward, other than the title, is a 27 place rise to 77th in the world.
