The BMW Munich Open is set to begin on Monday with a smaller schedule like many other tournaments which begin on 15 April with only four first round matches featuring two more protagonists aiming to reach the second round in the German clay court staple.
Our preview and schedule gives you all the information and looks ahead to the tournament starting on Monday and running through until 21 April.
Starting proceedings shortly at around 11:00am local time will be Jack Draper with the Brit taking on Vit Kopriva. Since a superb semi-final run at Acapulco in which Draper again had injury issues, he has not fared too well albeit against bigger opposition.
He lost to Christopher O'Connell at Indian Wells, Nicolas Jarry in Miami and Hubert Hurkacz in Monte-Carlo with only the second tie being a second round game so this will be a chance for a confidence booster. But one of those will be that the Mexico run did actually come on this surface so it is one that despite only having a first round loss at Roland Garros, he seems adept to.
He opens up the schedule with Dominic Thiem on the other end not in any form whatsoever and likely pondering his tennis future. The Austrian said at the start of 2024 that if he made no improvement on his ranking this year that he would ponder retirement. Well that has almost been like a poisoned chalice with Thiem going backwards if anything. Multiple disheartening losses at Challengers were bookended by some bright sparks in Estoril. But he then suffered a crushing loss to Roberto Bautista Agut at Monte-Carlo in attempting to qualify. RBA or as he was depicted as 'the ghost of Roberto Bautista Agut' is in no form himself so that merry go round continues.
He will face Spanish qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas. But the fear will be that facing another unknown that he may face a similar fate to recent challenger losses. Bright American talent Alex Michelsen follows against Max Hans Rehberg, a German wildcard.
Another wildcard in Rudolf Molleker follows on to complete the session facing off against Italian qualifier, Francesco Passaro. With many of the top names still in or leaving Monte-Carlo, the schedule will ramp up tomorrow.
