The 2024
Mexican Open Acapulco (also known as Abierto Mexicano Telcel Acapulco) will take place between 26 February - 02 March as the second part of the Mexican adventure after the Los Cabos Open.
A top field assembled and given Hurricane Otis, a tournament lucky to even be on. Our
preview looks ahead to proceedings in a tournament which also hit the headlines after players were told to remain in their hotel rooms amid organised gang crime.
Zverev, Rune, Tsitsipas and Rune headline field in tournament lucky to be on
With devastation from Hurricane Otis, it is lucky that the Mexican Open Acapulco is even on in the first place with most of the country being decimated. But they managed to announce that they will play on and have assembled a superb field.
Alexander Zverev,
Holger Rune,
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune will be involved over the course of the next week, with multiple unseeded stars including Ben Shelton also involved and lurking in the draw.
Frances Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur and also the two finalists from Los Cabos in Casper Ruud and Jordan Thompson will also hot foot it from Mexico with the latter sealing the biggest win of his career. But also with the amount of matches including in doubles both played, it is a tough pursuit to come straight there.
De Minaur will aim to defend his title also this time around and it was also a field that included Grigor Dimitrov. He has since withdrawn but it acts as a final stop ahead of Indian Wells.
Loco Down In Acapulco...by staying in their hotel rooms
As the classic Motown track by the Four Tops goes, You'll Be Going Loco Down In Acapulco if you stay too long and it seems the players will be doing that in their hotel rooms. Recent reports said that top players were told to remain in their hotel rooms including Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas when they arrive from Los Cabos as well as Holger Rune and Cameron Norrie due to high crime rate.
As the lyrics to the track also go: 'You'll be pulling out your hair, drowning in despair. With a whole lot of nothing on your way to nowhere.' and it seems that barring practice and match practice, they will return to an almost COVID like state of only seeing a few walls a day. But of course they are there for business and to win the title, an interesting facet to consider though and one to keep an eye on over the course of the week.
