Carlos Alcaraz is back as World No.1 and didn't have to lift his racquet in order to do it as he returns in this week's ATP Rankings amid points from Turin in 2024 dropping off the main rankings.
On the back of winning the Paris Masters, Sinner ascended back to top spot albeit his stay was always going to be one of execution and one he couldn't avoid due to the fact that the Italian couldn't add any points or stop it from happening. This due to the fact that the points from the ATP Finals last year were always going to drop.
Alcaraz only lost 200 points last year so he now has a 1,050 point cushion again and Sinner will need to be flawless in Turin to have any semblance of a chance of returning to said top spot before the year ends. Sinner called it impossible in the media during Paris and in reality despite.being rubbished at the time, it was semi true that it would be an uphill struggle.
Alcaraz himself only needs 250 more points and there are 200 points for each win to seal it without Sinner having a massive say in the matter. The Spaniard beating Alex de Minaur on Night One means that the task has got more tougher.
Alexander Zverev remains third but he is more than 5,000 points behind. There has been a huge gulf all season and that continues to be the case when it comes to the top two. Zverev had a chance to be World No.1 in the spring but that seems a world away when he is now not even a Grand Slam win away from getting onto the coattails of the top two. Novak Djokovic is only 130 points behind him but Zverev's ranking issues can't get worse as Djokovic will not play in Turin and although he had points due to the fact that he won the Hellenic Championship, he has now ended his season.
While Zverev on the otherhand continues his into the ATP Finals this week. Fritz moving down two spots also means that Ben Shelton is the new American No.1 as he is up one place to a career high of World No.5. Although the battle between these two is very much going to the wire as ever with the race to American No.1 continuing to change at a drop of a hat. Albeit instead of Tommy Paul now being involved like before, it is solely Shelton and Fritz flying the flag.

TIen rises as Bonzi leads huge drops

Although Alexander Bublik lost in the second round in Metz, he also sits on the cusp of the top 10 and given that the intermittent form of the names ahead of him at times, he is likely destined at some point to be top 10. A player who often has made a career solely as a showman. He has this year took his career more serious albeit still with those showman elements and is reaping the rewards.
He has won four titles and was very much en route to being at the ATP Finals at one point which would be a remarkable feat. It was Learner Tien who was crowned champion in Metz as he defeated Cameron Norrie 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in the final and he has risen ten spots in one of the top rises of the week. He is up to World No.28, just one spot behind the Brit.
Matteo Berrettini reached the Quarter-Finals and is up seven spots to World No.56 albeit this comes after a huge ranking drop in recent months after getting himself back towards his best although not his previous exploits of sitting World No.6.
Benjamin Bonzi as a result of not defending Metz has slid down 37 spots to World No.94 in one week while others who endured great ends to 2024 are now feeling the heat a year on including Hamad Medjedovic who is down 18 spots to World No.83. While Laslo Djere has dropped 17 spots to World No.99. The year end ATP Rankings will come next week after the ATP Finals albeit with the race to World No.1 looking likely to be Alcaraz it is likely to remain fairly the same.
