Day One of the
Canadian Open also known as National Bank Open is here from Toronto with the daily ATP
Preview to run through in the first ATP 1000 en route to the US Open.
Leading lights in action today include
Matteo Berrettini,
Frances Tiafoe facing home hero Milos Raonic,
Lorenzo Musetti, Alexander Bublik,
Tommy Paul and
Christopher Eubanks facing
Gael Monfils.
Berrettini and Tiafoe-Raonic lead Centre Court action
While Rebecca Marino leads WTA proceedings from a home hope point of view, it is multiple stars on the ATP side.
It all begins with Alexis Galarneau who faces Francisco Cerundolo with Vasek Pospisil also facing Matteo Arnaldi last of all in the session. But in between are the two matches to look out for.
Matteo Berrettini had a renaissance of sorts at Wimbledon. He reached the Last 16 losing to eventual champion, Carlos Alcaraz. It is his first appearance since and likely given his injury problems will be all the better for the time away from the court to recoup even further.
He faces Gregoire Barrere who lost to Dan Evans at the DC Open, but will Berrettini be the eventual champion he loses to in Toronto.
Milos Raonic will be the player with a lot of fanfare on Day One in a top clash. It is a first appearance in Canada for five years for their previous top star. He faces Frances Tiafoe who in Raonic's time away has ascended to be one of the top stars in men's tennis.
He lost to Dan Evans in the Quarter-Finals in Washington after a third round exit at Wimbledon and also played UTS which means he is one of the most active in the draw since Wimbledon. Will that be a hindrance though?
Stories elsewhere including Monfils-Eubanks, Musetti and Davidovich Fokina-Wolf
Elsewhere on outside courts, the top ties include Lorenzo Musetti facing Yoshihito Nishioka. After calling Alcaraz King Midas this past week, he will hope to be the King of Canada.
Alexander Bublik v Hubert Hurkacz is also a top tie which was lauded as a potential first round duel to watch. As was two entertainers as Gael Monfils faces Christopher Eubanks.
Monfils on the comeback trail got a few matches in DC this past week losing to Tallon Griekspoor in the Last 16 and will hope to fuel the fire of comebacks such as Alexander Zverev and even Dominic Thiem who reached the Kitzbuhel final last week.
While Eubanks previously had to qualify for tournaments like Canada. Now a top name in his own right after his Wimbledon run, he will receive top billing during this US Open run.
Other ties to watch include
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina facing J.J Wolf, with
Brandon Nakashima, Tommy Paul,
Zhizhen Zhang and recent Newport winner,
Adrian Mannarino also in action.
