Lleyton Hewitt will team with son
Cruz Hewitt again over the next week with it being a real possibility at this point that he will play the
Australian Open it has to be a thought.
Hewitt squared received a wildcard from the organisers for the Adelaide Challenger draw and will start against compatriots Jake Delaney and Li Tu.
In Sydney this past week, they were a sudden team and there were two thought processes. The first being that given Australia weren't in the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna that Lleyton Hewitt had a week off and wanted to tick off teaming up with his son. Given he's 44, that had to be the logical move.
But it seems that Hewitt in almost a reverse Stefanos Tsitsipas with his brother Petros who has often gained wildcards due to his status, it is Cruz who will likely benefit from more chances at least in doubles with the 16-year-old and 44-year-old tandem adding the Adelaide Challenger to their schedule.
You have to feel given it is not just a one off that Hewitt is aiming to make an interesting revival and come out of retirement at least for one Aussie summer to compete alongside his son in the doubles at the Australian Open - one given his hero status he is very much likely to get a wildcard for.
Hewitt is currently ranked World No.759 and although he reached a semi-final of an M25 event recently in Brisbane has found it tough to adapt. He no doubt will play the boys event again this year and also get a qualifying wildcard but given the crowds it will attract it is very feasible that Tennis Australia will see the dollar signs and find a spot in the draw for father and son.
A feat that perhaps Lleyton never thought he would get the chance to complete given that he retired fully five years ago and his son is only still a teenager but what a story it is.
