Canada entered the 2020 ATP Cup perfectly when they defeated Greece 3-0 after not losing a single set in any of the matches.
The young Canadian squad was very successful at the 2019 Davis Cup Finals where they
lost just to Spain in the final. But in Madrid, Canada could not rely on no.21 in the ATP Ranking, Felix Auger-Aliassime. Now the Canadian no.2 is back and ready to compete.
Auger-Aliassime started the
first tie in Brisbane. He did not have any major problems with world number 487 Michail Pervolarakis when he defeated him 6-1 and 6-3 in just 71 minutes.
After that,
Denis Shapovalov faced
2019 ATP Finals champion,
Stefanos Tsitsipas. Odds were in favor of the Greek, but once again, Shapovalov showed his passion for team competitions. In the first set, Tsitsipas had one set point in the 10th game, but he did not convert it and set reached the tie-break. There, it was Shapovalov who was successful and won it 8-6. In the 2nd set, we did not see any break again as Shapovalov triumphed in a tie-break again, winning it 7-4.
Canada added 3rd point after winning also in doubles. Auger-Aliassime & Shapovalov defeated Pervolarakis & Petros Tsitsipas 6-2 and 6-3 in just 69 minutes. Next, Canada will be facing Australia on
Sunday.
