Carlos Alcaraz had to retire injured in his debut at the
Rio Open after suffering an ankle problem. The match against Thiago Monteiro was 1-1 on the scoreboard when the player from Murcia had the misfortune that forced him to retire.
However, after the match, despite the obvious signs of pain he felt on the court of the Brazilian tournament, he wanted to reassure his fans and explained what happened:
"I think these things happen, especially on clay. It wasn't a problem with the court, I hurt myself on a change of direction and that happens on clay. I came back to the match to see if I could continue or not. I talked to the physiotherapist on the court and we decided together that I would continue to see if it got better. It didn't improve, so we preferred to be prudent and quit as a precaution".
NOT SERIOUS.
After the duel, in statements reported by Punto de Break, Alcaraz made it clear that the physios told him it was nothing serious: "The physios told me that it is not serious, I felt a lot of pain when I fell. I felt a lot of pain when I fell, it's not the fault of the court, it was only in the change of direction. These things can happen. I'm not the first one to have something like this happen, many other players have gone through this".
Of course, the question on everyone's mind is whether or not he will play in Indian Wells and before the exhibition in Las Vegas with Rafa Nadal, who also doesn't know if he will make it: "Right now it hurts to walk. I'll take it easy. I will try to rest today and tomorrow I will do tests.
