Fans rallied to defend Ben Shelton following criticism of his controversial celebration against Casper Ruud at the Mexican Open. The 21-year-old tennis player engaged in an electrifying quarterfinal, but ultimately, the Norwegian secured the victory with a 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-4 triumph in two and a half hours.
Young Shelton faced scrutiny for passionately celebrating a net cord that allowed him to save a set point against Ruud. Many tennis players and fans believe that such points should not be celebrated in this manner, as it may be deemed disrespectful to the opponent, considering the unpredictable nature of net play.

"Man this kid is SO unlikeable hahaha. Like even if he was best friends with Djokovic, he’d still be so cringe with this ugly attitude.. He’ll grow up I hope, just like Kyrgios did," other user wrote.

he's not celebrating a net cord, he's celebrating SAVING SET POINT to equalize the tiebreaker. if that's not worth celebrating, then i don't know what is. strange how people have these double standards for one of the only mixed race players at the top of the tour.
Have you ever competed at anything remotely high level in your life? This is absolutely not a big deal
If you watched the match then you know exactly why he reacted like that and what he was upset at Casper for.
That’s not a “net cord” point. That would be if Casper’s ball landed short and in, giving Shelton an easy winner. The shot was out, and it was during a TB and saved a set point. I don’t understand the obsession with people hating on Shelton. Anyone would have celebrated that…

It was set point…. What’s the problem with celebrating?
im not even his fan but some of yall literally force yourself to see anything wrong with it. seeing such reactions in tight tiebreaks is common, even if there was an intense rally that ended with an opponent's error. don't look for and create problems where there are none.
