Daniil Medvedev continues to roll at the 2024 Australian Open taking down Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the Last 16 in Melbourne after a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over the Canadian who has had a good week after there were doubts about where he would go next after horrific form in recent months.
But for Medvedev, his form has been sparkling and he goes up to 7-0 in the Head to Head record against Auger-Aliassime who he also took down in the 2022 Quarter-Finals in Australia. Next up will be Portuguese ace, Nuno Borges. He took down earlier today one of the most in form players on the ATP Tour in Grigor Dimitrov 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 to book his spot in his best ever run.
But he will come up against Medvedev next who had to play until nearly 4am against Emil Ruusuvuori and despite that test both physically and mentally, he made sure that he wasn't going to have a similar ordeal against Auger-Aliassime. Lasting just over two hours, the first set was decided in the first instance by a sudden break as Auger-Aliassime had chances to hold serve but a back and forth saw Medvedev snatch the only break point.
He also grabbed one on the second opportunity to seal the set. Set two saw both Medvedev lose his serve early on as Auger-Aliassime edged ahead but he took it back at 3-3 which proved pivotal as he surged towards the second with Auger-Aliassime not getting a chance to hit back on the Medvedev serve.
This broke the spirit of Auger-Aliassime with Medvedev surging to a one break set at 3-1 comfortably and was barely troubled on his serve in completing the win.
Quizzed post match what time he went to bed after finishing at nearly 4:00am against Emil Ruusuvuori, he quipped that he got five hours of sleep but wasn't feeling 100%. “Yeah. As I say it’s not easy. Not feeling fresh or 100%. We tried to make the best work possible with my team. Went to bed at 7. Woke up at 12. Then had a good night of sleep. At least I have this super ability. I can sleep where I want, whenever I want.”
