Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic is on his way to steal another
record from Switzerland’s legendary tennis player
Roger Federer.
The 36-year-old is currently defending his
Wimbledon title
in London as the tournament now moves into the second round.
Djokovic is the most successful player in the history of men’s
singles tennis in the Open era as he has won 23 Grand Slam titles.
Despite being the most successful player out of the
so-called ‘Big Three’, many believe that Djokovic has not received the kind of
appreciation he deserves.
One of the reasons is that he was the third player in the men’s
singles tennis history in the Open era after Federer and Spain’s
Rafael Nadal
to win 20 or more Grand Slam titles.
Out of all three, Federer remains the most iconic player
as he was the first in the Open era history to achieve the feat by defeating Marin
Cilic in the final of the Australian Open back in 2018 with a score of 6–2,
6–7(5–7), 6–3, 3–6, 6–1.
The 41-year-old was also the first to win 15 men’s singles Grand
Slam titles, overtaking America’s legendary tennis player Pete Sampras in the
process.
However, Djokovic now has the opportunity to take away
another record from Federer as he is well on his way to becoming the oldest
player to lift the Wimbledon title.
Currently, Federer remains the oldest player to achieve the
feat six years back in 2017 after defeating Cilic in the final in straight sets with
a score of 6–3, 6–1, 6–4. He was 35 years, 10 months and 26 days old on that
day.
If Djokovic manages to win the title on July 16, which will
also equal Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles, he will become the
oldest player to achieve this feat as he is already over the age of 36.
