Roger
Federer commented on how
Carlos Alcaraz is handling the pressure.
World No. 1
Alcaraz is currently on a 7-0 winning streak on grass this year. He has already
defeated Jeremy Chardy and Alexandre Muller, both in three sets, to reach the
third round of
Wimbledon. In the next round, he will face the 25th seed Nicolas
Jarry.
Given
Alcaraz's limited experience on grass, there were doubts about how he would
perform during this grass-court season. However, he has already claimed the
title at the ATP 500 Queen's Club Championship.
20-time
Grand Slam champion
Roger Federer shared his thoughts on the pressure that
comes with tennis, especially for young players, and highlighted Alcaraz's
ability to handle that pressure:
“I don't
like to put too much pressure on young players like ‘He's going to do this’ But
he's the type who says ‘I’m coming to Wimbledon, I'm coming to win. I'm coming
to Paris, I'm coming to win.' He puts it on his own which is great”
Alcaraz admiration for Federer
When Carlos
Alcaraz learned that Roger Federer had been in the Royal Box alongside the
Princess of Wales, watching Andy Murray's match against Ryan Peniston, he
expressed his desire to see Federer among the spectators during one of his
matches. Alcaraz expressed his admiration for Federer and his excitement at the
possibility of having such a legendary player watching him play:
“I felt
‘jealous’ that Federer was at Centre Court and not at my match,”
“I’m glad
he’s around, that he’s still involved in the tennis world. I’d like to see him,
although I don’t know if there’s time. For me it would be incredible and I wish
he could stay more days and watch some of my matches,”
Carlos
Alcaraz will face Chilean player Nicolas Jarry in the third round, which is
scheduled for tomorrow. Jarry advanced to the third round by defeating Marco
Cecchinato and Jason Kubler, achieving his first third round at the All England
Club. Earlier this year, Jarry and Alcaraz met in the semifinals of the Rio
Open, where the 2022 US Open champion turned the match around after losing the
first set and won by a score of 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-0.
