The ATP Finals are scheduled to take place between November 9th and 16th in Turin, Italy, for the fifth consecutive year. The tournament will gather the season's top 8 players, led by Jannik Sinner, the recently crowned World No. 1 and defending champion. The local favorite will have to defend his title and hope for a setback from Carlos Alcaraz if he hopes to remain atop the rankings.
Another major story will be the performance of Americans Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz. This is the first time since 2006 that two American singles players have attended the tournament in the same season, a feat last achieved by Andy Roddick and the eventual runner-up James Blake. Fritz was a finalist in 2023, and he could drop significantly in the rankings if he fails to secure wins. With only a 35-point difference separating them in favor of Shelton, whoever performs better in Turin will finish the season as the American No. 1.
Germany's World No. 3, Alexander Zverev, hopes to bounce back from a couple of consecutive defeats to Sinner in his recent finals at the Vienna Open and the Paris Masters (where he was the defending champion). The 2-time champion (2018, 2021) was surprised in the 2024 semi-finals by Fritz, and this time he will be going for his 8th appearance at the ATP Finals—only interrupted in 2022 amidst a long injury that sidelined him for much of the season.
Alex de Minaur was the 7th player to qualify for the ATP Finals after a consistent final part of the year, securing 15 wins out of his last 20 matches. The Australian is heading into his second consecutive appearance at the tournament. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti sealed qualification with Novak Djokovic also withdrawing late.

Final spot drama

The 8th spot is still being defined amid the final week of competition. Felix Auger-Aliassime took the 8th place after reaching the Paris Masters final, following a year of quietly achieving great results, including three ATP 500 titles, his second career Masters 1000 final, and the US Open semi-finals, among others.
However, everything is in the hands of World No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti, who held a large advantage over Auger-Aliassime but was surprised by the Canadian's late-season surge. The Italian took a wildcard entry into Athens this week and is holding onto the possibility of reaching the ATP Finals by winning that title.
