As the world still battles against the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, numerous organizations have been forced to postpone events or cancel them entirely.
With the ATP
suspending all activities till June, millions of fans pondered on the fate of the French Open.
Roland Garros is traditionally held at the end of May and this raised concerns about it's occurrence this year.
The French Open organizers eventually released a statement, announcing that the event would be
postponed till September. This elicited an array of reactions, as the
US Open and subsequently
Laver Cup are held at that time of the year.
This would mean players have to compete in two Grand Slam tournaments in five weeks. Furthermore, they would have to travel across two continents, while playing on two different surfaces.
Although several players are yet to officially respond,
Adelaide champion Andrey Rublev gave his thoughts on the matter.
"At first, I was surprised by the announcement, but I think it’s better to play Roland Garros later than to suspend the event completely." says Rublev.
"Unlike team sports, tennis players don’t have a monthly salary." disclosed the Russian. "We earn money based on results we get in tournaments.
If we don’t play, we can’t get anything. I believe this is good news, with Roland Garros that offers big prize money for many players."
