Toni Nadal is not coaching
Rafael Nadal for a while now but his uncle is still a staunch supporter of his nephew and his latest comments took a shot at Djokovic.
Nadal recently emerged as the first player to win 21 grand slam trophies with his surprise triumph at the Australian Open. It's an event where Djokovic historically dominated and was expected to do so once more but a lot of things went wrong and Djokovic was deported out of the country before the event started. Toni Nadal praised his nephew for what he did while also taking aim at Djokovic saying that Nadal would be number one had he not been injured.
"Today, Djokovic is number one in the world, but only because Rafa could not play the whole season. If he wasn't so injured, he would be number one. There is not much difference between him and Djokovic and Federer."
It's an interesting comment that technically could have some merit as we don't know how the season would have been had Nadal been completely healthy. The healthiest Nadal was during the whole year was at the Australian Open and Djokovic won that event even though they did not play. In Rome Nadal bested Djokovic after the Serbian had to play two matches in the span of hours.
At the French Open, where Nadal was already dealing with severe foot issues, Djokovic proved better winning in four sets. Perhaps 2022 will answer the question.
